Muratov “Journey to Apulia” Italian translation evolution of philosophical view Copyright © 2026, IWL RAS 2026 The contribution focuses on the publication of the essay “Journey to Apulia” (1925) by Pavel P. Muratov (1881–1950) in Italian language, translated by the Italian Slavist Donatella Di Leo, at the Rome publishing house UniversItalia in 2021. Muratov’s work previously drew attention in Italy when the two-volume “Images of Italy” translated by Alessandro Romano and edited by Prof. Rita Giuliani (2019–2021) were published. “Journey to Apulia” is the result of a trip on board of a sidecar through the wild region of Southern Italy, where, according to the Russian critic, there may still live a type of “folk man”, a “figure in the landscape” living in a symbiotic way with nature. The text shows the theses expressed in the cultural studies essays “Anti-art” and “Art and Folk” (1924), exposing a completely different view on the reality than before: the aesthetic-poetic component gives place to the concrete, critical one. The Italian translation of “Journey to Apulia” offers to readers, art historians and Muratov enthusiasts the opportunity to observe the evolution of the artistic-philosophical view of the Russian critic.   1.
