The article presents a cultural-philosophical analysis of the phenomenon of power and power strategies in the publishing field as exemplified by Russian émigré publishing houses and periodicals of the 1920s—1950s. Power is regarded as a juxtaposition of two wills in which an abstract concept is materialized. The author argues that power is always aestheticized as well as manipulative being conditioned by the wish and possibility to impose one subject’s (individual or collective) will on another. Relying on the description of publishing practices in émigré memoirs and archival documents, the author reconstructs the power instrumental body implemented in Russia abroad’s publishing business and periodicals and the complete paradigm of power relationships participants including the owners and editors of the publishing houses and periodicals, their sponsors, censors, editorial bodies, authors, translators, and readers, with special attention paid to power implementation mechanisms.
