The purpose of this study, based on the analysis of archival and printed sources, is to show the relationship: the existence of M.A. Bulgakov’s dramaturgical works in the 1980s — early 1990s, the peculiarities of the work of researchers and publishers with the documentary heritage of the writer and the ideological agenda that influenced this work. The main task solved by the author of the article was the analysis of unpublished documents from the personal archives of Bulgakov scholars A.A. Ninov and M.O. Chudakova, who participated in the preparation of the collections of M.A. Bulgakov’s dramaturgy series “Theatrical Heritage”, as well as in other academic projects related to the publication of the writer’s texts. An attempt is made to clarify the main causes of the protracted conflict that arose in the early 1980s between the leadership of the Department of Manuscripts of the Lenin State Library of the USSR and a group of scholars led by doctor of philology A.A. Ninov. Unpublished documents and printed sources covering the complex history of the academic publication of Bulgakov’s theatrical heritage are considered for the first time.
