On the History of the Nomination of the Academic Edition of the Complete Works of A.S. Pushkin for the Stalin Prize

Abstract:
In November 1949 The Academic Council of the Gorky Institute of World Literature of the USSR Academy of Sciences has nominated the Academic edition of the Complete Works of A.S. Pushkin as a candidate for the Stalin Prize. The list of the “main preparers of the publication” did not include the names of its key participants — B.V. Tomashevsky, T.G. Tsyavlovskaya-Zenger and N.V. Izmailov, which was sanctioned by one of the nominees, a member of the scientific council of the Gorky Institute D.D. Blagoi. In an effort to restore justice, T.G. Tsyavlovskaya turned to the head of the editorial office of the academic publication V.D. Bonch-Bruevich and prepared documents describing the contribution of each participant to the work on the publication. A few days later, the chairman of the Board of the USSR Writers’ Union, A.A. Fadeev, was sent a request to include three more editors in the list submitted by the Gorky Institute. Despite the actions taken, the Committee for the Stalin Prizes in the field of Literature and Art rejected the nominated publication at the stage of preliminary discussion. The published materials deposited in the archive of the Editorial Office of the academic publication make it possible to reconstruct an episode not known to date and assess the contribution of individual participants of the Academic edition of the Complete Works of A.S. Pushkin to the implementation of the project.
