Collection “Expressionism” in the Publishing House “World Literature”: From Intention to Implementation

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the history of the publication of the collection “Expressionism”. The collection was published in the “World Literature” in 1923 and became an important event in the Russian reception of the German cultural phenomenon. This study, based on the protocols of the editorial board, introduced into academic circulation for the first time, examines how the initially conceived monograph by G. Bar turned into a collection of articles covering expressionism in various art forms. Members of the editorial board when discussing issues related directly to the collection (composition, translators, introductory article), shared their assessments of expressionism as an aesthetic phenomenon. The article contains the statements of E.I. Zamyatin, A.L. Volynsky, A.N. Tikhonov. The protracted history of the publication of the collection became an occasion for irony of the publishing house employees themselves, which was reflected in the parody Yearbook of World Literature. The Аppendix contains excerpts from the protocols of the meetings of the editorial board.
