“Pasternak’s Shadow”: Spanish-Language Responses to Sholokhov’s Nobel Prize (Based on the Collection of K.I. Priyma)

Abstract:
In the late 1960s and early 70s, literature scholar K.I. Priyma accumulated a large collection of reviews in the foreign press for the 1965 Nobel Prize for Literature awarded to M.A. Sholokhov. In these works, for obvious reasons, there was no space for an analysis of Pasternak’s role in foreign responses to the prize. In our article we attempt to fill this gap using the example of the Spanish- language press from the collection in the archives of the Rostov Regional Museum of Local History. The Spanish-language press selection allows us to conclude that the name of Boris Pasternak has appeared extremely frequently (more often than that of Ivan Bunin). Interestingly, Pasternak was mentioned both by critics and by apologists for official Soviet literature in order to assess whether the 1965 prize was also a political gesture, to remind readers of Sholokhov’s behaviour after the 1958 prize was awarded to Pasternak and to contrast the writers with one another. In the eyes of the Spanish-speaking reading public, the two Soviet Nobelists still were antipodes. The article is complemented by materials from the Spanish and Latin American press from the collection of K.I. Priyma.
